First Roll

Well, it's official.  I'm in love with film.  These are from my first roll of film--Portra 400.  I shot these last night in the early evening sun with a Nikon f100 and a 50mm 1.4 set at 2.2 with shutter speeds varying between 2500 and 6400 (for photography nerd interested in that stuff).  I also used my digital camera to double check my settings before I started shooting (I set it at ISO 400 and the aperture I wanted and then took a shot using the shutter speed I thought I'd need to make sure I was in the ball park).

I was just too impatient to have them sent to a lab and I really wasn't sure how they'd turn out so I took them to Walgreens this morning to have them developed.  Putting the disc of my scans into my computer when I got home was like opening the most exciting Christmas present imaginable.  I squealed as I looked through them.  I am absolutely hooked already.  Even though there's a TON of room for improvement and so much to learn, these images just look and feel like me in the way I try to get my digital images to look.

I'll always shoot digital but I really look forward to learning and practicing more with film and seeing the ways it influences my digital work.  With film there's a real sense of needing to take a moment, breathe, make sure what you see through your viewfinder is exactly what you want to capture.  And there's no sense in taking 10 duplicate images and hoping one of them looks the way you want.  I found myself really being patient and waiting for moments.  I think that mentality will help my digital photography grow so much.

Baby Parker, part 1

This little guy's mama and I have been planning his newborn session for a looong time.  When she initially emailed me way back in her second trimester inquiring about a newborn session, I had to decline and refer her to some other local photographers since I wasn't sure if I'd still be in the area (military life!).  A couple of months later I recognized her name when she commented on a picture I posted of another newborn and decided to email her to let her know that I would still be here and that if she hadn't already booked someone else I would love to do her newborn session.  She responded right away with a big "yes!" and we put a tentative date on the calendar.  We corresponded over the coming weeks about the colors of his nursery, what time of day might work best, and finally when little Parker arrived.

When the day came to meet this brand new little boy I was full of excitement.  He was SO precious and slept almost the entire time I was there.  He gave me so many sweet little poses and expressions without me having to do much of anything.  I love the way that as he moved around, the changing light was able to highlight all of his tiny newborn features.  I even caught a tiny smile.  I had so much I wanted to share that I decided to do two posts for Parker and this post includes images of just him.  The next post will include images of Parker with his family.  Enjoy!

Logan is 1!

Little Logan is one of the most fun, affectionate little guys I've met.  He is so curious and so sweet.  During his entire cake smash he wanted to share his cake with me, his mama, and his kitty.  It took a little bit of coaxing to get him to really tear into his cake but once he did he was a pretty happy camper. When he was finished he got rinsed off and changed to play in the grass with his pinwheel.  I am so grateful to have spent part of this 4th of July baby's 1st birthday with such a special little boy (we really did his session on the 4th!).  Happy Birthday, Logan!
